Love it or hate it, but it’s hard to deny that the design of Sony’s latest gaming console is bold. The company revealed the PlayStation 5 family at its virtual event today, capping it off with the unveils.
The hardware is stylish and futuristic on its own.
But equally fascinating are the accessories that go with it, as well as the discless variant.
Sony will be offering a pair of PS5 models at launch, one with a traditional disc drive, and the other without one. The company took a leaf out of Microsoft’s playbook here, emulating its approach with the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which clearly is the way to go with this.
It’s pretty clear that the Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5 is meant to be the standard model.
The version with the disc drive comes with a rather unattractive lump on the side. Plus, it goes without saying that the disc variant will likely be more expensive than the base model — what with the 4K Blu-ray drive adding heftily to the cost.
To accompany these two models, Sony also unveiled an array of accessories. These include a media remote, the DualSense Charging Station, an HD camera, and the Pulse 3D wireless headset.
Unsurprisingly, Sony did not dive into the pricing details of either the two console models, or the abovementioned accessories. The Japanese giant is keeping these details very much close to its heart, most likely in the hope that Microsoft would announce the price first.
That said, the launch window of holiday 2020 was reiterated.
If that is any indication, and both console models do arrive in the October to November timeframe, then preorders should open rather soon. That will clearly be our best bet to find out the price of the PlayStation 5 family.
Interesting days ahead.
